ADOPTION PROCESS

We are committed to helping make our adoption process as easy as possible. We look forward to working with you!

Freedom Hearts adoptions are accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis and are subject to availability. We are not able to do walk-in or same-day adoptions, including if you submit an application during an adoption event. Adoption applications typically take a few business days to process. Approved applications are good for six months, so if you decide to adopt another cat from us within that timeframe or need time to choose your forever pet, you can submit an application, get approved, then choose the cat(s) you fall in love with!

Holds

We understand that when you fall in love with an animal, you are anxiously awaiting taking him/her home with you. Given that our first priority is always the well-being of the cats in our care, we can only place holds on specific cats for individuals with approved adoption applications.

Meeting Cats

When it comes to meeting our cats, because we are a foster-based rescue, our cats reside in the homes of our fosters. However, cats that are able to do attend our adoption events, held about twice monthly at the PetSmart in Retail Commons in Martinsburg, WV. During events, visitors are more than welcome to meet the cats we have at the event and ask us questions! It’s a great way to see if you and the cat you are interested in are a fit! Additionally, on a case-by-case basis we are able to accommodate requests for meet-n-greets for approved adopters only.

Ongoing Support

We are committed to our cats (and their adopters) for their lifetime. Throughout the life of your pet, we will work to help you find solutions, even if that means your cat needs to return to Freedom Hearts.

If you discover your new cat is not a good fit, or if you have an emergency, or your circumstances change, we are here to help. In fact, our adoption contract states that, in the event our cat needs to be returned/surrendered, they must come back to us.

Adoption Requirements

Requirements to Adopt from Freedom Hearts:

  • Be 21 years of age or older

  • Provide a valid ID with current address (if address is not current, provide other proof of residency)

  • Complete FHAR Adoption Application

Adoption Benefits

  • Spay or neuter surgery

  • Age-appropriate vaccinations

  • Deworming

  • Microchip (if requested, free of charge)

  • Combo test (FIV and FeLV)

  • Flea & Tick Treatment/Prevention

  • Full medical physical exam (as needed any lifesaving surgical or medical procedures/medications.)

*We encourage adopters to bring their own carrier, or one can be purchased at PetSmart.

Adoption Fees

  • We charge a flat rate of $95.00 for all cats, regardless of age. This is our attempt to be accessible to the individuals in our community!

  • You can pay with cash or card!
